The Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS), which was launched on 22 November 2015,  aspires to be an international centre of excellence for the advancement of technology and innovation by bringing together an interdisciplinary team of world-renowned scholars and researchers, including Nobel laureates and academicians, to contribute to the solutions of pressing real-world problems. 

CityUHK has established a range of research institutes and research centres, including two state key laboratories and one national engineering research centre, covering different areas of strategic importance to foster interdisciplinary research.

To intensify CityUHK’s research impact in the region, two institutes in Shenzhen and Chengdu in mainland China have been set up.

CityUHK adopts an open and collaborative approach to research, sharing results for a positive impact on the world. In line with this ethos, we have identified three overarching research themes to pursue that specifically respond to the academic and societal challenges we all face in our highly interconnected world.

CityUHK sees research as one of the key pillars for becoming a leading university in the region. The University provides different resources and support, from world-class research facilities to administrative support on funding applications, to create an environment for researchers to achieve innovative and high-quality research.

CityUHK research efforts have created a broad range of knowledge, discoveries and inventions. We believe by encouraging knowledge transfer, we can turn these new findings into applications, benefiting our community in Hong Kong and beyond.
