City University of Hong Kong’s (CityUHK) ranking in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025, announced last October, was recently adjusted, climbing to a record 78th from the original 80th position. CityUHK also excelled in the latest 2025 THE World University Rankings by Subject, with seven subjects breaking into the world’s top 100 and two of them ranked in the world’s top 50. Law was ranked 2nd in Hong Kong and 7th in Asia, showcasing CityUHK’s outstanding capabilities in academics and research and further affirming its excellence.

Owing to the strong performance in Research Quality (Citation impact, Research strength, Research excellence, Research influence) of CityUHK, THE recently updated CityUHK’s ranking in the THE World University Rankings 2025 to 78th, up four places from 2024. The updated ranking accurately reflects the University’s research impact. Since entering the top 100 in the THE World University Rankings 2023, CityUHK has steadily improved its ranking, particularly in internationalisation, earning the title “Most International University” earlier last year.

Additionally, seven CityUHK subjects were ranked among the world’s top 100: Business & Economics, Computer Science, Engineering, Law, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences. Among these, Law, and Business and Economics continued to be ranked in the global top 50, placing 42nd and 48th, respectively. Law was ranked 2nd in Hong Kong and 7th in Asia. Also moving up in the rankings this year were five disciplines: Computer Science, Law, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, and Arts and Humanities. Social Sciences saw the largest increase, climbing from 98th last year to 61st place this year. 

Among local universities, CityUHK had four disciplines ranked in the top three in Hong Kong – Law, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, and Arts and Humanities – reflecting the recognition of the University's world-class research teams and capabilities.

Professor Freddy Boey, President and University Distinguished Professor of CityUHK, expressed his delight at the international recognition received by the University. “CityUHK has seen robust development in recent years, with its academic achievements and innovative research being highly recognised both locally and internationally. CityUHK is committed to addressing sustainable development challenges through pioneering research and providing innovative solutions for urgent global issues,” he said.

“We will continue to support our teaching and research teams in advancing cutting-edge research, promoting industry-university-research collaboration, creating an invaluable and powerful synergy to have a positive impact on society, and actively promoting Hong Kong as an international hub for higher education while building the ‘Study in Hong Kong’ brand,” he added. 

CityUHK has excelled in various global rankings. In addition to being named the Most International University by THE last year, CityUHK was ranked 25th globally, 8th in Asia, and 2nd in Hong Kong in the THE Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2025. Furthermore, in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) 2025 Asia University Rankings, CityUHK was ranked 10th in Asia and 3rd in Hong Kong.
