City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) is immensely proud to announce that our esteemed Pro-Chancellor, Dr Chung Shui-ming, GBS, JP, has been honoured as one of the Non-Executive Directors of the Year (2024) in the Listed Companies category by the Hong Kong Institute of Directors. This accolade recognises his exemplary service as a Non-Executive Director of China Railway Group Limited.

The Panel of Judges commended Dr Chung for his extensive experience and profound knowledge as an Independent Non-Executive Director, highlighting his exceptional commercial acumen and strategic mindset. They noted, “Dr Chung demonstrates a solid understanding of business, is articulate, and highly engaged, and has effectively taken on both a leadership and ‘check-and-balance’ role, guiding the Board of the Group to maintain healthy growth despite a challenging environment.”

Further praise was given for Dr Chung’s expertise in governance, risk, and control, with the judges emphasising his strict self-discipline. They noted that he sets a strong example as the chairman of the Audit and Risk Committee, which is full deserving of this award.

Dr Chung’s association with CityUHK dates back to 1998 when he was appointed to the University Council. His dedication and leadership have been evident through his roles as Treasurer (1999-2003), Deputy Council Chairman (2004-2006), Council Chairman (2006-2008), and as external member of the University Court (2014-2016). During his service on the Council and the Court, Dr Chung generously shared his insights and selflessly contributed, fully demonstrating his exceptional talent and vision. Since his appointment as Pro-Chancellor in 2016, Dr Chung has continued to be a pillar of strength and guidance for the University.

Beyond his invaluable contributions to CityUHK, Dr Chung, a distinguished professional accountant, has held numerous senior management positions in banks, financial institutions, listed companies, and public institutions. His extensive service on various government boards and public bodies further underscores his commitment to excellence and public service.
