City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) welcomes the Government’s promulgation of the Development Outline for the Hong Kong Park of the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Co-operation Zone (hereinafter referred to as “the Hong Kong Park”), building it as an international innovation and technology hub and a world-class industry-academia-research platform in the Greater Bay Area (GBA). CityUHK has actively promoted the transformation of the University’s world-class scientific research into applications, creating commercial and social value and fostering the development of industry-academia-research collaboration. CityUHK is committed to supporting the Government’s initiatives.

CityUHK initially plans to move some of its research teams, including the CityUHK Academy of Innovation, the Institute of Digital Medicine, the flagship innovation and entrepreneurship programme HK Tech 300, and the Hong Kong Institute of AI for Science, into the Hong Kong Park. This move is fully aligned with the Hong Kong Park’s major development directions of creating a world-class industry-academia-research platform, establishing an internationally competitive research and development transformation and pilot production base for industries, fostering a hub for pooling global innovation and technology resources, and cultivating a testing ground for institutional and policy innovation.

For instance, the CityUHK Academy of Innovation and the HK Tech 300 teams can focus on deep technology entrepreneurship in the Hong Kong Park, creating an ecosystem that nurtures young entrepreneurs and strengthens the collaboration between industry, academia and research. The Institute of Digital Medicine can promote regional innovation and digital healthcare, and the Hong Kong Institute of AI for Science can further advance scientific research in artificial intelligence.

Professor Freddy Boey, President of CityUHK, stated that the Hong Kong Park will become an important collaboration platform between Hong Kong and the Mainland China, fostering deeper understanding, sharing and partnerships in the GBA. He said, “This is good news for CityUHK students, faculty and researchers, as they will have more significant opportunities to learn and conduct research in the Hong Kong Park.”

CityUHK has actively supported the development of the GBA and was the first higher education institution in Hong Kong to enter the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Co-operation Zone. With the support of the Futian District People’s Government in 2020, the CityUHK Shenzhen Futian Research Institute (currently named the CityUHK Matter Research Institute (Futian)) was established and has made significant research achievements in high-tech areas, such as electron microscopes, 4D printing and precision medicine for cancer treatment.

CityUHK will continue to support scientific research development in the GBA and contribute to society and the Country.
