City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) is delighted to announce today (12 June) that Professor Anderson Shum Ho-cheung will be appointed as its Vice-President (Research), effective from October 2024. In addition to this role, he will also serve as the Chair Professor of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering in both the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Professor Shum is an esteemed scholar who has received his B.S.E. degree, summa cum laude, in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University, and his S.M. and Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Harvard University. He currently holds a professorship in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and is a core member of the Biomedical Engineering Programme at The University of Hong Kong (HKU).

With a wealth of administrative experience at a senior level, Professor Shum concurrently serves as the Associate Vice-President (Research and Innovation) at HKU. His previous roles include Associate Head in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Assistant Dean (Special Projects) in the Faculty of Engineering at HKU. His research interests span emulsions, biomicrofluidics, biomedical engineering, and soft matter, and he has been recognised with numerous international awards in these fields.

Notably, Professor Shum is the first scholar in Hong Kong to be selected as a Global Young Academy Member. He is also the President and Founding Member of the Hong Kong Young Academy of Sciences. His editorial contributions include serving as the Associate Editor for Biomicrofluidics (AIP Publishing), Editorial Board Member for Microsystems & Nanoengineering (Springer Nature) and Scientific Reports (Springer Nature), and Editorial Advisory Board Member for Lab on a Chip (RSC Publishing), among other accomplishments.

Professor Freddy Boey, President of CityUHK, extended a warm welcome to Professor Shum for joining the University community.
