City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) solidified its position as a leading hub for research and innovation in Hong Kong by topping local institutions for the 8th consecutive year in the prestigious Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted US Utility Patents. CityUHK secured 44th position on the 2023 list, demonstrating its commitment to accomplished research that has a scientific, technological or social impact.

The list, published annually by the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), recognises universities around the globe for their significant contributions to scientific discovery and commercialisation.

As of March 2024, CityUHK had applied for more than 1,580 patents for technologies around the world, 765 of which have been granted, spanning a wide range of fields, including electricity, chemistry, materials and physics.

CityUHK's high ranking on this list underscores its role as a key player in the global innovation landscape. CityUHK received 36 awards at the 48th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva, marking the 3rd year the University has received the highest number of awards among local institutions. Moreover, 27 faculty members from CityUHK were named Highly Cited Researchers for 2023 by Clarivate, placing the University 44th worldwide and 10th in Asia. 

The NAI is a member organisation comprising more than 250 US and international universities, and governmental and non-profit research institutes worldwide. It enhances the visibility of academic technology and innovation, encourages inventors to register innovative creations and intellectual property, educates and mentors innovative students, and translates members’ inventions to benefit society. The NAI annually ranks the top 100 universities worldwide for the highest number of utility patents granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, serving as a globally recognised benchmark for university research output.
