CityU Employers’ Luncheon boosts ties with industries

The CityU Employers’ Luncheon boosts the University’s ties with the industrial and corporate world and cultivates more opportunities with prospective employers to enhance the employability of students.

City University of Hong Kong (CityU) hosted The Employers’ Luncheon on 16 March and more than 500 participants attended including over 300 senior management representatives from reputable employers from a wide spectrum of industries and fields attended the event.

Now in its third year, the luncheon also featured an exhibition displaying students’ excellent achievements.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr Herman Hu Shao-ming, Council Chairman of CityU, said that collaboration with industries and organisations worldwide gave students a better understanding of an increasingly globalised world.

“CityU has prepared students in every possible way for skills and knowledge that are required in different career fields. To further promote global engagement among CityU students, academic exchange opportunities have multiplied in recent years,” he said.

Professor Horace Ip Ho-shing, Vice-President (Student Affairs) of CityU introduced the luncheon keynote speaker, Dr Allan Zeman, Chairman of Lan Kwai Fong Group and a holder of an honorary doctorate from CityU. In a speech titled “Start Early, Aim High and Don’t Look Back – What Millennials Can Do for a Successful Career”, Dr Zeman shared his story about running a successful business and making Ocean Park such a popular theme park.

He also wanted to encourage students to grasp the “can do” spirit. “You should have confidence in yourself. You can do everything,” he said.

Dr Zeman said students should aim high and be more creative as the world was changing rapidly. He also suggested that participating employers should hire more young people so that they could bring new technology and thinking to their companies.

Professor Way Kuo, CityU President, thanked Dr Zeman for sharing his insights on the importance of being creative. He mentioned that the establishment of the School of Veterinary Medicine was a good example of CityU pursuing out-of-the-box thinking.

The employers in attendance were senior management representatives from a variety of multinational corporations based in Hong Kong and abroad. Among those attending were Deloitte China, Ernst & Young, HSBC, Hang Seng Bank, MTR Corporation, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited, Lan Kwai Fong Croup, and many more.

The exhibition included nearly 50 projects on CityU students’ learning experience and achievements in innovations. CityU’s unique Discovery-enriched Curriculum encourages students to make good use of the resources in innovation and technology made available by the University. It also spurs the development of creative ideas.

Also in attendance were Mr Vincent Chow Wing-shing, Deputy Chairman of the CityU Council, Professor Alex Jen Kwan-yue, CityU Provost, Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on, Vice-President (Development and External Relations), Mr Sunny Lee Wai-kwong, Vice-President (Administration), and Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Chief-of-Staff. About 200 academics and students also participated.
