Campus fashion show promotes sustainability

The podium at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) was transformed into a runway on 25 September to help promote second-hand clothes.

The fashion show was part of the “Hand2 Fashion @ Project Flame” initiative. It was the kick-off event for the 2013–14 activities for Project Flame, a campus-wide interdisciplinary project for staff and students at CityU aiming to foster social innovation and social entrepreneurship on campus.

Incorporating the idea of recycling and reusing, the second-hand and used apparel worn by 16 CityU student models in the show were donated by colleagues from Nu Skin Greater China under its annual Force for Good programme. The show intended to create stylish looks and encourage second-hand shopping as well as spread the message about sustainable consumption.

“CityU is committed to contributing to effective solutions to local and global issues through social innovation and student leadership development,” said Professor Arthur Ellis, CityU Provost.

“The fashion show exemplifies CityU’s Discovery-enriched Curriculum which emphasises discovery, innovation, and creativity while promoting whole person development, including nurturing a strong sense of social responsibility, sustainability and ethics.”

Mr Andrew Fan Ka-fai, CityU Council member and Regional President, Nu Skin Greater China, said the donation of second-hand clothes to Hand2 Spot was very meaningful.

“We should work together to create a more sustainable world, which requires engagement, collaboration and action by all stakeholders,” he said.

Nu Skin Greater China has donated over 100 pieces of clothes to Hand2 Spot for second-hand trading. The styling and creation of the looks for the fashion show were supported by the Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation, while the music at the show was suggested by a music therapist.

Hand2 Fashion is a part of Project Flame’s flagship project Hand2 Spot, which is a unique university platform created by CityU for second-hand items collection and sales. All income from the sales of the items in the show will be used for the operation of Hand2 Spot.
