City University of Hong Kong (CityU) is proud to present the CMC Summer Festival 2013 from 21 May to 22 June at the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre (CMC).

This exciting programme of media art from Hong Kong, China and abroad presents innovative thought provoking exhibitions, talks and performances by emerging and established artists of international renown.

The exhibitions include “40+4: Art is Not Enough! Not Enough!” initiated by Davide Quadrio, a lecturer at the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts, Lothar Spree, a documentary filmmaker and media artist who lives in Shanghai and Berlin, and Zhu Xiaowen, a Chinese media artist, scholar and curator residing in Los Angeles.

This pioneering 360-degree immersive installation presents interactive interviews with 40 Shanghai artists. It has been produced by Bernd Lintermann at the world renowned ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, and is being presented in conjunction with Art|Basel Hong Kong.  

“Shanghai Soulmates” by Rolf A. Kluenter, a Shanghai-based visual artist and filmmaker, is a nine-screen video installation that intimately engages a community of artists living in Shanghai. Professor Tamas Waliczky, a world-leading animation artist and scholar at the School of Creative Media (SCM) at CityU, presents two of his most recent installations “Homes” and “Wheels”, which animate Tai O fishermen’s family houses and human bodies respectively via computer interfaces.

A major exhibition of remarkable photographs by award winning SCM graduates and alumni is entitled “Image on the Run” and curated by Mr Julian Lee Chi-chiu, Associate Professor in SCM. On the top floor of the CMC “Analogue” is a project exhibition where 280 Year 1 students have made their creations inside cardboard boxes of the same size.

In addition, visitors can view “Pure Land: Inside the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang”, a seminal CityU research project that envisions the future of digital preservation and cultural heritage interpretation. This “augmented reality” installation lets the viewer explore the paintings and sculptures of Dunhuang Cave 220, virtually repositioned inside the CMC.

The exhibitions open from 12pm to 7pm, Monday to Saturday, 22 May to 22 June except “Image on the Run” (ends on 6 June) and “Analogue (ends on 13 June).

Other participating artists include Jessica Thompson, a Canadian new media artist whose projects investigate spatial and social conditions within urban environments through sound and performance. On 24 May at 6:30pm Ms Thompson will present “Triangulation Device” which is designed to be played by the audience to generate sound through body and movement. 

Prominent artists giving lectures include Michael Naimark, NYU Tisch School of the Arts and the MIT Media Lab, Boston, Christa Sommerer, Professor and Head of the Department for Interface Cultures at the University of Art and Design in Linz, Austria, and Zheng Bo, Assistant Professor at China Academy of Art, Hangzhou.
