The President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Professor Bai Chunli today received a certificate for the Honorary Doctorate that was awarded by City University of Hong Kong (CityU).

 

Professor Bai also delivered his first lecture in Hong Kong since he became the President of CAS, discussing his views on the development of nanotechnology.

 

Professor Bai was welcomed to CityU by Professor Way Kuo, University President; Professor Horace Ip Ho-shing, Acting Vice-President (Research and Technology); Professor Lu Jian, Dean of the College of Science and Engineering; Professor Liu Chain-tsuan, University Distinguished Professor; Professor Jeffrey Shaw, Dean of the School of Creative Media; and Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on, Director of the Communications and Public Relations Office.

 

CityU conferred an honorary doctorate on Professor Bai in recognition of his exemplary achievements in a variety of scientific fields, for his expert management of technology, and for nurturing scientific and technological talent. His contributions have significantly advanced China’s scientific and technological development.

 

As Professor Bai was conferred in absentia last week, Mr Herman Hu Shao-ming, CityU Council Chairman, presented the certificate for the Honorary Doctorate today.

 

“It is my great honour and privilege to receive the Honorary Doctorate of CityU, one of the fastest growing universities in the Asia-Pacific region,” Professor Bai said.

 

In his address, Professor Kuo said Professor Bai had been friends with CityU for many years. “He was at CityU to deliver an important lecture on nanoelectronics two years ago and has shown interest in the University’s latest development,” he said.

 

After the presentation, Professor Bai gave a lecture titled “Progress in and Prospectives for Nanotechnogy: From Fundamental Research to Application”, which attracted a packed auditorium and initiated a lively Q&A session.

 

Professor Bai also visited the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre where he said he was impressed by the “Pure Land: Inside the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang” exhibition.
