Two outstanding local business leaders received Honouree Awards from the chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) yesterday (28 February).

Dr John Chan Chun-tung, Chairman of Chaifa Holdings, and Dr Dennis Sun Tai-lun, Chairman and Managing Director of China-Hongkong Photo Products Holdings Ltd, were conferred with the honour at the 3rd Induction Ceremony of the CityU chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma. In addition, 148 outstanding CityU students and graduates were inducted as lifetime members.

The Honouree Award gives recognition to outstanding executives and promotes the founding spirit of Beta Gamma Sigma, an international honour society serving business programmes accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International.

Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest recognition a business student anywhere in the world can receive in a business programme accredited by AACSB International. Collegiate chapters worldwide can recruit new members and bestow Honouree Awards on two distinguished business executives each year.

Dr Chan and Dr Sun are both staunch supporters of CityU with strong ties to the campus community. Dr Chan was the recipient of CityU’s first Distinguished Alumni Award and one of the lecture theatres on campus has been named in his honour. Dr Sun served as Chairman of the Community Relations Committee under the University Council during his eight-year term as a Council member. He is currently a member of the CityU Court.

“CityU’s College of Business is committed to nurturing future business leaders and equipping students to tackle challenges,” Dr Chan said after expressing his delight at receiving the award. “My motto is ‘Be prepared for success and failure, but never be willing to give up.’ I wish to use my own experience to help students learn the way of founding a company and operating a business.”

Dr Sun was also glad to receive the award. “The CityU chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma serves as an excellent meeting point for business professionals to share their experience,” he said. “My philosophy of management is to be diligent, honest, trustworthy and meticulous. Young people should set a clear goal, broaden their views and equip themselves properly.”

Professor Wei Kwok-kee, Dean of the College of Business, commended the two recipients for their contributions to society and the business sector. “It is our pleasure to confer these awards on Dr Chan and Dr Sun. They have achieved a great deal in the business sector and possess all the excellent qualities cherished by Beta Gamma Sigma,” he said.

A total of 475 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students and graduates from the College of Business have joined the CityU chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma since its establishment in 2008.
