As a pioneer in applied research in the region, CityU aims to bring together opinion leaders to exchange their experience of and suggestions about scientific research in order to shape a clear direction for future development in
The conference, which is being sponsored by the Croucher Foundation, will be held at Wei Hing Theatre in City U. Topics include how scientific research contributes to economic growth; the roles government authorities play in the development of applied science; how the sector can shape the direction of applied science research; and what are the pressing issues that have to be dealt with to sustain development in Hong Kong.
Professor Chan Chi-hou, Dean of Faculty of Science and Engineering at CityU, and Professor (Chair) Johnny Chan Chung-leung of the Department of Physics and Materials Sciences at CityU, will join the conference.
Professor Chan, the chairman of the organizing committee, said CityU strongly supported applied research and that the conference would help generate constructive suggestions that would promote the economic growth of
The Hong Kong Institute of Science will also hold the 2006 Young Scientist Award presentation during the conference, which will be officiated by Dr Sarah Liao Sau-tung, Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works. This award is open to all postgraduate research students from local universities with an aim to recognize budding young scientists and engineers and stimulate greater awareness of science among the younger generation.
The ceremony will be held in Wei Hing Theatre at 10am.
