CityU psychology expert elected Fellow of the American Psychological Association
Dr Cheng Sheung-tak, Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Social Studies at City University of Hong Kong (CityU), has been elected Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of community psychology.

Dr Cheng, one of two psychologists in
Dr Cheng’s most prominent research interests include positive ageing, social ecology and psychopathology, plus subjective well-being and affect. He says people should be positive about ageing and advocates the promotion of inter-generation therapy. To this end, he is working to provide research that elicits government and community support, encourages older people to participate more and helps prevent depression among the elderly. He is member of the United Nations Programme on Ageing and will publish an article on the ageing problem in the Asia-Pacific region in the World Ageing Situation Report.
Dr Cheng thanked CityU for its continuous support and for providing him with a great deal of applied research opportunities. “This honour further strengthens my ambitions to ensure applied research into psychology can have a significant impact on society,” he said.
APA is a US-based scientific and professional organization with 150,000 members, the largest association of psychologists worldwide. Fellow status is granted to members whose work has had an international impact on the field of psychology. Nominees are nominated by APA members and then selected by the APA Board of Directors and a membership committee.
