Secretary for Innovation and Technology visits CityU
Mr Alfred Sit Wing-hang, JP, Secretary for Innovation and Technology, HKSAR Government, visited City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 19 June.
President Way Kuo extended a warm welcome to Mr Sit, together with members of the senior management team, including Professor Lu Jian, Vice-President (Research and Technology), and Professor Richard Yuen Kwok-kit, Chief-of-Staff.
During the meeting, President Kuo highlighted our strengths in teaching and research, our world-class faculty, and our modern academic programmes.
Professor Lu also introduced major projects related to Smart City and One Health, two of the five interdisciplinary research themes included in CityU’s Strategic Plan 2020–2025, demonstrating our capabilities and expertise in these fields.
At the same time, the discussion stressed the importance of related government support for R&D involving the government, academia and industry. Both sides also exchanged views at the meeting on CityU’s suggestions for promoting the development of innovation and technology in Hong Kong. They include the involvement of CityU’s strengths in the development of One Health and Smart City; the launch of a scheme to support universities partnering with the world’s top companies and emerging hi-tech companies involved in developing R&D in Hong Kong; and encouraging greater commercialisation in the Greater Bay Area.
According to recent information, CityU has performed very strongly in world ranking exercises, including being placed #48 in the latest QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings, and is ranked among the top 22 globally in terms of research quality as measured by citations per faculty member.
