SCM professor exhibits at prestigious Biennale Arte 2019
Professor Tamás Waliczky of the School of Creative Media (SCM) of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has been selected to represent Hungary at the prestigious Biennale Arte 2019.
Titled “Imaginary Cameras”, the Hungarian Pavilion at the Biennale Arte 2019 (also commonly known as the Venice Biennale) revolves around the wide array of possibilities of visual perception and the ways in which they can be captured and depicted.
In his solo exhibition, Professor Waliczky displays a series of computer-rendered 3D graphic works and animations, in which he has created imaginary cameras. These works have been developed at CityU since 2016.
“I am interested in the question of how we see the world. I design optical devices that do not exist to show that there are different possibilities of showing reality. Through my exhibition, I’d like to call attention to see the world in different ways, not the standard way,” said Professor Waliczky, who was born in Budapest and is a prominent representative of contemporary new media art.
He began creating animations at the age of 9. He has been working with computers since 1983 when the first home computer appeared, and he is a pioneer and an eminent representative of Hungarian digital art.
Professor Waliczky, who joined CityU 10 years ago, said he was grateful for the University’s support over the years. “CityU’s support system is excellent. I am able to make new projects nearly every year,” he said. “In SCM, there is a strong, international group of teachers and good artists. Under such an atmosphere, we can compete with each other and at the same time, collaborate on different projects.”
Venice Biennale (Italian: La Biennale di Venezia) is an art festival with over 100 years of history. It is one of the most important art activities in Europe. Venice Biennale, Kassel Documenta and Sao Paulo Art Biennial are considered the world’s three biggest art exhibitions.
