A ceremony on 13 January kicked off the first Mobile Technology Festival being held at City University of Hong Kong (CityU). Organised by CityU Apps Lab and co-organised by the Office of Education Development and Gateway Education, the University-wide festival introduces how mobile technology affects daily life, and showcases students’ innovative apps.

 

The Hon Charles Mok Nai-kwong, Legislative Councilor representing the Information Technology sector; the Hon Michael Tien Puk-sun, Legislative Councilor; Ms Joey Lam Kam-ping, Deputy Government Chief Information Officer (Policy & Community), HKSAR Government; and Mr Herman Hu Shao-ming, CityU Council Chairman, officiated at the ceremony. Dr Ray Cheung Chak-chung, Director of CityU Apps Lab and Assistant Professor at the Department of Electronic Engineering, gave thank you address afterwards.

 

The Hon Michael Tien and Ms Lam were invited to try two of the apps developed by students: Robot-Control App - Controlling the Motion of Humanoid Robots; and VR Room Escape - Virtual Reality on Smartphone Using a Google Cardboard, respectively.

 

At the ceremony, awards were presented to CityU Apps Lab’s five start-up projects which have secured the funding from the Cyberport Creative Micro Fund (CCMF) Scheme.  

 

The festival, being held until 21 January, includes an array of activities, for example, an exhibition showcasing students’ innovative apps with demonstration, seminars on e-health, e-learning and user experience, private coaching sessions for technology start-ups, sharing by winners of start-up funding schemes, and a recruitment fair.
