More than 60 nuclear experts from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan discussed reforms for nuclear engineering education at the Cross-strait Summit on Education in Nuclear Engineering and Technology at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) from 18 to 20 November.

Professor Way Kuo, CityU President, called attention to the public’s concern about nuclear energy development in the region in his welcoming address at the opening ceremony, while Mr Kang Kejun, Director of the Steering Committee on Higher Education in Nuclear Engineering and Related Technology, presented a report on the development of nuclear education in mainland China.

In his keynote address, Professor Lu Jian, CityU’s Vice-President (Research and Technology) and Dean (Graduate Studies), outlined teaching and research in nuclear energy and risk engineering at CityU.

The summit was organised by CityU with Tsinghua University as the co-organiser. The Steering Committee on Higher Education in Nuclear Engineering and Related Technology, Ministry of Education in China acted as the advisor. The initiative was backed by governments in the Greater China region.

The summit was attended by faculty deans and department heads from more than 30 universities and research institutes in the Greater China region, including CityU, Tsinghua University, National Tsing Hua University, China Institute of Atomic Energy, Peking University, Fudan University and Xi’an Jiaotong University.

Participants discovered more about CityU’s technological facilities and its laboratories on the visits around the campus that the organisers arranged.
