New entrants to the 4-year and 3-year undergraduate programmes of the six colleges and schools at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) were given a huge welcome at orientation sessions organised by Student Development Services from 28 to 30 August.

A welcoming ceremony on 28 August marked the beginning of a series of activities aimed at introducing students to excellence in professional education at CityU, encouraging them to lay a solid foundation for professionalism, and developing the right attitude to learning.

Professor Way Kuo, University President, welcomed the new students with an introduction to the University, emphasising CityU’s successful development in recent years. “The new buildings that you can see around campus show that CityU is booming,” he said. “Our faculty and teachers are promoting the integration of research and teaching, and our Discovery-enriched Curriculum will provide you with every opportunity to make your own original discovery. We hope that you will find something at CityU that will enrich your life and enlighten your studies over the next three or four years, leading you to a bright future.”

During the Robing Ceremony that marks the commencement of the students’ university life, Jenny Lam Ching-nga, President of the Students’ Union, led the new students in pledging their commitment to the University. The students vowed to live their student life to the fullest and to do their best at all times. They also pledged to broaden their horizons, seek new knowledge, respect their fellow students and teachers, and take pride in themselves and CityU.

Existing student representatives from the colleges and schools shared their experiences of learning at CityU, discussing the professional teaching, student exchange programmes, internships and different student activities. The representatives encouraged the new students to grasp every opportunity in the coming years to learn as much as they could.

A brief introduction on the next-generation professional education implemented by CityU was presented by Professor Arthur Ellis, Provost. He told the new students that studying in CityU was a journey of imagination and creativity. He also introduced the Discovery-enriched Curriculum, the Gateway Education courses, e-learning and m-learning initiatives, and the advisor and student mentor programme. He encouraged the students to learn to be professional by being confident, engaged and creative, and to learn by asking questions.

Each college and school has organised similar orientation sessions to help new students integrate with the CityU family.
