Students at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) acquired details about various industries and professional opportunities in mainland China at a dinner with prominent industrialists arranged by the Career and Internship Office on 22 March.
The dinner, held for the fourth year running, was sponsored by the Lions Club of Metropolitan Hong Kong and the CityU Eminence Society. The title of the event was “Dancing with the Dragon: How to Make Use of Career Opportunities in China Today”. Speakers at the dinner provided students with updates about the China job market, career planning and work opportunities outside Hong Kong.
Around 240 students and more than 100 industrial practitioners from about 80 companies representing various industries mingled during the course of the evening. Representatives from accounting and auditing, finance and banking, legal, information technology, building and construction, logistics, airlines, public utilities, media, education, advertising and public relations, and many others, were present.
Professor Way Kuo, President of CityU, encouraged students to grasp learning opportunities to better prepare for their future careers. “Our Discovery-enriched Curriculum is specifically designed to meet the needs of our rapidly changing world. We believe that all the skills that you learn, including communication skills and knowledge, will lead to a successful career.”

Mr Kelvin Lau, Manager, Technology Recruitment of Michael Page International, analysed the employment index in China in his keynote speech titled “Opportunities and Challenges in China Employment Market”. He pointed out that the job market in China provided many opportunities for graduates to develop a career and introduced the current hot jobs and industries over the border.
He also suggested students build up a good personal branding, network, and develop good language skills. He emphasised that the person who is well prepared will always succeed.
