A treasure trove of books has been donated to the library at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) by the Consulate General of Chile.

The collection of over 30 Spanish-language and bilingual Spanish and English titles covers art, literature, history, geography, botany, culture, maps, photographs, prints and paintings.

“We are thrilled to receive this wonderful gift,” said Professor Steve Ching Hsianghoo, the University Libarian, during a donation ceremony on 24 November. “Books are a great way of connecting people, illuminating areas of mutual interest and encouraging greater understanding.”

Mr Mario Artaza, Consul General of Chile, said at the ceremony that he hoped the gift would enhance cultural ties between Chile and Hong Kong. While a free trade agreement between China and Chile had been in operation since 2006, academic and artistic exchanges needed to be expanded, too, Mr Artaza explained.

“The donated books can help to bridge the Pacific through knowledge that benefits all communities,” he said.

During his visit to the CityU library, the Chilean consul general also had the opportunity to practice writing Chinese characters using a traditional brush.
