The high quality of engineering research papers produced by faculty at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has earned international recognition from a well-established ranking body.

CityU has been ranked 33rd in the world, and 1st in Hong Kong for the fourth consecutive year for engineering research papers, according to the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities released by National Taiwan University on 10 November.

In world-wide subject rankings, CityU was placed 7th in computer science, 18th in electrical engineering, 26th in mathematics, 48th in mechanical engineering, 68th in civil engineering, and 69th in materials science.

In addition, according to the 2011 Academic Ranking of World Universities published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, CityU was among the world’s top 50 universities in engineering, technology and computer science, earning 42nd position overall. Computer science at CityU was ranked 50th and mathematics 52-75.

Worldwide recognition for CityU’s research achievements is encouraging to all members of the University community, said Professor Way Kuo, University President, adding that the positive news about engineering research aligns with strong progress in other areas such as academic development and donation campaigns.

CityU will ride the momentum to develop into a leading global university, excelling in research and professional education and providing students with a desirable learning environment.

CityU also demonstrated its research strengths in the humanities and social sciences. According to the 2011 World University Rankings published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), CityU made 72nd place in social sciences and 79th in arts and humanities. In subject rankings, the University received a top ranking of 47th in linguistics, and joined the league of the world’s top 100 universities in English, sociology, politics and international studies. CityU was ranked 47th in statistics and the top 100 in accounting and finance, too.

The Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities was launched by the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan in 2007. Starting from 2011, National Taiwan University assesses and publishes the rankings by field and subject.
