The Division of Building Science and Technology (BST) at City University of Hong Kong is holding the two-day BuiltExpo 2009. Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor (top), Secretary for Development, HKSAR, has been invited to open the expo on 17 April. Under the theme “Built Environment Revitalisation”, projects on display include designs for a high-rise commercial building, building conversions and revitalised historic buildings. Chan Hui-ling (bottom), an Associate of Science in Architectural Studies student, is the winner of the Project Competition for her design of a commercial building located in Causeway Bay. Her design concept draws its inspiration from fashion. The layered ramps inside the building resemble the layering of fabric in women’s clothing. She uses stainless steel mesh to filter strong sunlight, while allowing in the natural light, creating an environmental-friendly and stylish building.

The expo is an annual event. It provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their creativity, apply their knowledge, experience teamwork and improve problem-solving skills. It showcases around 100 building and construction projects by final-year BST students from the four Associate of Science Degree programmes, namely Architectural Studies, Surveying, Building Services Engineering or Construction Engineering and Management.
