The Department of Economics and Finance of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) hosted a conference titled “Recent Developments in the Financial Market and the Role of Professional Training” on 15 March, at which financial experts shared their professional knowledge. The conference promoted ties between the University and the financial sector.

 

Acting President Professor Richard Ho Yan-ki said the conference was timely given in reponse to the fast-changing globalised financial markets. Professor Ho also stressed the growing popularity of professional qualifications in the financial sector and the provision of high quality service in a knowledge-based economy.

 

About 400 guests, CityU alumni, undergraduate and postgraduate students and faculty members attended the event. Veteran financial experts provided valuable insight and shared their experience working in the sector.

 

Mr Lam Yat-fai, Manager of the Banking Policy Department, Hong Kong Monetary Authority, provided details on the CFA Examinations and shared some strategies on preparing for the examinations to attain internationally recognised risk management qualifications. He is also a teaching fellow in CityU’s Department of Economics and Finance.

 

Mr David Wong Yiu-sang, Head of Risk Management, Asia Pacific, HSBC Investments (HK) Limited, and Dr Cheng Wai-yan of BBVA were also guest speakers at the conference. They shared their insights into global investment performance standards and financial structuring, respectively.

 

At a dinner held for financial professionals to promote exchanges, Professor (Chair) Eden Yu Siu-hung, Head of the Department of Economics and Finance, told the participants that the Faculty of Business had recently obtained accreditation by the Association of MBAs (AMBA). Together with those received from AACSB International in 2005 and EQUIS in 2007, the faculty is the only business school in the Greater China region to be triple accredited, a testament to the superb quality of its business programmes.

 

“We will continue to provide quality education to the inspired young students and mid-career professionals. Ultimately, the students will be our walking accreditation, living proof of our achievements,” said Professor Yu.

 

At the conference banquet, Mr Stanley Wong Yuen-fai, Director and Deputy General Manager of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Asia), also gave a keynote speech on the banking market in China.
