The Faculty of Science and Engineering at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) is holding a two-day exhibition on campus from 30 to 31 May to showcase the creative talents of its students.

The projects on display have been developed by undergraduate and postgraduate students from the Departments of Physics and Materials Science; Building and Construction; Biology and Chemistry; Computer Science; Electronic Engineering; Mathematics; Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management. In addition, the Co-operative Education Centre, under the auspices of the Faculty, is taking part.

The projects have a strong focus on the practical and creative. Highlights include robots for playing robo-soccer; inspecting gas pipes and painting lamp posts, plus an introduction to anti-phishing techniques, authentication for automated-teller machines, face detection of human-like characters in comics.

Group visits are being arranged to give local secondary school students more information about the Faculty’s programmes and activities. Many students say these tours help them a lot when they are preparing for further studies.

Professor Henry Chung Shu-hung, Associate Dean of the Faculty and the Chairman of the Faculty Committee on Student Activities and Alumni Affairs said the students’ projects at the exhibition were fine examples of CityU’s success at promoting applied research. He added that the exhibition facilitated exchanges with secondary school students, thus broadening the knowledge base in related subjects.
