The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) signed an agreement on 20 March with Shenzhen Graduate School of Peking University (Peking U) to launch the Joint Research Student Supervision Scheme, which aims at fostering high-calibre graduates in the field of electronic and information engineering.

This agreement exemplifies CityU’s commitment to strengthening ties with mainland universities and its achievements in applied research and nurturing outstanding graduates.

Professor (Chair) Roderick Wong, Dean of Research and Graduate Studies, and Professor Lin Junjing, Director of Shenzhen Graduate School and Vice-President of Peking U, signed the agreement.

“The scheme signals a closer partnership between both universities,” Professor Wong said. “Not only can it generate a wealth of professional knowledge and applied research in engineering subjects, it also facilitates the long-term development of higher education in Hong Kong and

the mainland. Its impact is far reaching.”

Professor Lin said this agreement paved the way for future collaborations between both universities. “I hope this collaboration can be extended to other programmes and faculties in order to facilitate academic exchange, research activities, foster talented students and enhance internationalization,” he said.

After Professor Luk Kwai-man, Head of the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE), introduced the content of the agreement, Professor Chan Chi-hou, Dean of Faculty of Science and Engineering, said EE excelled in applied research, technology transfer and grooming talented graduates and had attained an international standard.

“Peking University is one of the top universities in the world and renowned for its high quality teaching and excellence in research. This is a reciprocal collaboration bringing advantages to both sides,” Professor Chan said.

CityU promotes academic exchange, research activities, and the development of local higher education through collaboration with higher education institutions on the mainland.

It has launched a co-supervision scheme of research students with the Graduate School at Shenzhen, Tsinghua University following the establishment of the Joint Advanced Research Centre in Suzhou by CityU and University of Science and Technology of China in 2005 and the subsequent postgraduate programmes.
