With the concerted efforts of CityU colleagues, the results of the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) in the past five years have been very encouraging. The average admission score of new students recruited through the main round offer of the 2005 JUPAS Admissions Exercise hits a record high of 10.34. This achievement shows that the University's mission to offer quality professional education is winning recognition from prospective students.

 

The 2005 average admission score, calculated on the basis of two AL subjects or one AL subject plus two AS subjects, represents a rise of 4.66% over that of last year

and 13.37% over 2001. Professor Richard Ho, Dean of Undergraduate Education, believes all CityU colleagues have played a key role in making this possible. "The admission score shows that the quality of students admitted to CityU has been going up. Our success in attracting better quality students reflects the dedication and hard work of a great many colleagues in various units," he said.

 

The Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE), for example, has organized a wide range of summer activities over the past few years to stimulate secondary students' interest in science learning. To attract better quality students by providing them with a taste of university life, FSE has worked with its constituent departments this summer to organize Project-based Outreach Programme, Summer Lab Attachment Scheme, and Science and Engineering Fun Days, said the Dean of FSE Professor C H Chan.

 

Meanwhile, the Faculty of Business and some of its departments have held talks for Form Seven students to introduce them to the Faculty's programmes on offer. "Secondary school education is usually exam-based. The talks introducing our application-oriented progammes may give them some helpful hints for selecting programmes," said Mr Alex Tham, an Instructor in the Department of Marketing who was responsible for coordinating the admission talks.

In the 2005 JUPAS Admissions Exercise, about 80% of the entrants admitted to CityU's UGC-funded bachelors degree programmes placed our programmes in their Band A choices.
