Twelve innovative systems development projects, created by  Department of Information Systems (IS) students working hand-in-hand with local industry, are on display on the 4/F Podium of CityU’s Academic Building from 17 to 19 March 2005. “Next Generation Network and mBusiness”, featuring final-year projects by IS Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) students, features many new technologies not yet deployed in Hong Kong, including next-generation Internet (Internet-2, IPv6), 3rd Generation (3G) mobile phones and enhanced mobile and web services.

The Honourable Mr Sin Chung-kai, Legislative Councillor; Mr Stephen K M Lau, JP, OBE, Chairman of EDS Hong Kong; Mr Michael Yu, Manager of Hewlett-Packard Asia Pacific (Hong Kong) Ltd; Professors Matthew Lee and Wei Kwok-kee, respectively Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Pogrammes) of the Faculty of Business and IS Head, opened the exhibition today (17 March).

Developed according to the interests and needs of the six sponsor companies, the projects include: a mobile road show system using next-generation Internet, developed with the assistance and guidance of Hewlett-Packard Asia Pacific (Hong Kong) Limited; an airline reservations system using 3G mobile phones, requested by ABACUS Distribution Systems (Hong Kong) Ltd; plus an RFID-equipped logistics system and an RFID-based document workflow system, aimed at improving the warehouse operations and customs clearing process of its two sponsors, Nova Solution Limited and Porter Express Logistics Solutions Limited.

“The sponsors have contributed not only their time and ideas to help our students complete their projects successfully, but also resources, such as hardware, software and funding,” said Professor Wei at the opening ceremony.

“Given our close ties with industry, we have been able to provide our students with real-world challenges and experience,” said Mr Michael Ho, Senior Lecturer in the IS. “Such partnerships can help students acquire a good grip on the latest technologies and apply what they’ve learned in class. Because it also helps the industry develop new systems at low cost, this is a ‘win-win’ situation,” Mr Ho added.

The Department of Information Systems in CityU’s Faculty of Business offers a BBA degree with a major in either Information Systems or Electronic Commerce. The final-year project is an elective for students taking a systems development project with a commercial or internal sponsor. This is the sixth year that the department has exhibited the students’ final-year projects to showcase their all-round business and applied-technology skills.

The exhibition is open from 10am to 8pm on 17 and 18 March and from 10am to 5pm, on 19 March, at the Podium, 4/F, Purple Zone, Academic Building of CityU. For exhibition project details, please visit the website: http://www.is.cityu.edu.hk/fyp/project2005.
