In an effort to bring Pearl River Delta region students closer together, CityU students organized this year's student leadership conference under the "linking student leaders in the Pearl River Delta" theme.

The Conference, from 9 to 13 June, was organized by CityU students and aimed to promote whole person education. Some 120 students from CityU, Zhongshan University, South China University of Technology, Jinan University, Shantou University, Guangzhou University and Shenzhen University participated in a variety of seminars and forums that explored the role of the Pearl River Delta in the development of China.

 

"Be prepared. Set your eyes not only on China, but also on the world," said Mr Allen Lee, Member of the Commission on Strategic Development, at the Student Leadership Conference 2002 opening ceremony. Echoing similar advice, CityU President H K Chang said: "Identification with one's cultural roots and clear vision of one's future, are the attributes of leaders in the new century."

 

Other guests included Mr Chu Zhi-nong, Director-General of Education, Science and Technology of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, and CityU's Professor Edmond Ko, Vice-President (Education). First launched in 2000, the Student Leadership Conference aims to develop students' leadership skills and broaden their vision. Last year, the programme was extended to students of eight local tertiary institutions.

 

 

 

 

 

Many successful leaders, including Dr Patrick Ho, Chairman of the Arts Development Council, Mr Francis Ho, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Mr C S Ng, Chairman and CEO of Computer and Technologies Holdings Limited, and Mr Stephen Lau, Chairman of the Tax Services of Ernst & Young, shared their leadership insights at the conference.
