Organized by CityU's Division of Building Science and Technology (BST), BuiltExpo 2002 attracted around 3 ,000 visitors to its opening ceremony, exhibition and seminars.

This year the theme was "Sustainable Built Environment - Intelligent Building", which urged designers and builders to provide an environment in which people can live and work comfortably, effectively and in harmony with the nature. BuiltExpo 2002 featured the work of over 120 final year students, including those from the Division's first batch of associate degree students. Exhibits included drawings, models and full sets of documentation.

"Our building graduates will make life more beautiful for people in Hong Kong -- because they build Hong Kong," said Professor Richard Ho, Provisional Provost of CityU's College of Higher Vocational Studies, who officiated at the opening ceremony together with Vice-President for Education, Professor Edmond Ko, Dr Cheng Hon-kwan, Hong Kong Housing Authority Chairman and CityU honorary graduate, Mrs Julie Mo, Head of BST, and other guests at the Wei Hing Theatre on 13 April.

At the ceremony, awards were presented to Student Projects of the Year. Outstanding entries were developed from real-life construction projects. One of the winning groups, comprising associate degree students Lee Ka-wing, Annie So Ka-doi and Esme Tam Yee-man of Architectural Studies, worked on a project to help commercial and institutional developments in Causeway Bay at Yee Wo Street and Tung Lo Wan Road.

Mrs Julie Mo said that the student project exhibition at BuiltExpo 2002 represented a balance of knowledge and creativity, and a mix of technological and presentation skills. "The quality of the students' work has been confirmed by the promising feedback from our panel of judges," she said.

BuiltExpo, a core function of BST, has been held annually since 1994.
