In Memory of Professor William Case

It is with great sadness that the Southeast Asia Research Centre (SEARC) shares the news of the passing of Professor William Case on February 1 who, from 2007 to 2011, was its director.  A distinguished scholar in the field of Southeast Asian comparative politics, he helped consolidate SEARC's reputation as one of the major centres for the study of the region globally. 

A professor in the Department of Asian and International Studies (AIS) from 2007 to 2017, he served as the department's acting head from 2011 to 2013. Before coming to CityU he had held academic positions at Griffith University, the University of New South Wales, and the Australian National University.  After retiring from CityU in 2017, he served as Head of School and Professor of Politics as the University of Nottingham Malaysia in the School of Politics and International Relations.  

Particularly noted for his contributions to the study of Malaysia, Bill was a champion of Southeast Asian studies, a field to which he made significant contributions through his teaching, research, and many noted publications.  His contributions at SEARC and AIS made a lasting impact on his students and colleagues at CityU and beyond.

SEARC director, Prof. Mark R. Thompson and SEARC associate director, Prof. Diego Fossati, attended the IPSA (International Political Science Association) 75th Anniversary Conference in Lisbon, Portugal 11-13 September 2024 during which they presented papers about their ongoing research on Southeast Asian politics and society.
