Professor Andrey Rogach, Chair Professor of Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Founding Director of the Centre for Functional Photonics (CFP) has been elected Foreign Member of the Academia Europaea for his significant contributions in research in materials science.

Prof. Rogach authored over 500 scientific publications with an h-index of 108 (Web of Science) and 121 (Google Scholar) in synthesis, assembly and optical spectroscopy of colloidal semiconductor and metal nanocrystals and their hybrid structures, and their use for energy-related and optoelectronic applications. His work in these fields has been extensively cited (over 50,000), which ranked him as Highly Cited Researcher (Clarivate Analytics) – Cross-Field 2018 and 2019 and Material Science (2020), and 51st worldwide among “100 Top Materials Scientists of the Past Decade” by Thomson Reuters (2011).

The Academia Europaea was established in 1988 and is the Pan-European Academy of Sciences Humanities and Letters. The object of Academia Europaea is the advancement and propagation of excellence in scholarship in the humanities, law, the economic, social, and political sciences, mathematics, medicine, and all branches of natural and technological sciences anywhere in the world for the public benefit and for the advancement of the education of the public of all ages in the aforesaid subjects in Europe.

Membership is by invitation. Invitations are made only after peer group nomination, scrutiny and confirmation as to the scholarship and eminence of the individual in their chosen field. Election is confirmed by the Council of the Academia. Members are drawn from across the whole European continent. Members also include European scholars who are resident in other regions of the world. Current membership stands at around 4,500. Among them are seventy-two Nobel Laureates, several of whom were elected to the Academia before they received the prize.
