LSU will work with University Radiation Protection Officers (URPOs) and revise the University policies and guidelines for Radiation Safety. A new policy/guideline regarding the requirement of medical examination for radiation worker will be established and will submit to University for approval within this year. Grateful if you can forward this message to relevant person in radiation work within your department and ensure appropriate action is taken to align with the latest policy development.
By law Cap 303, any person in any radiation work (receive radiation dose >6mSv per year during IA operation) or any work or process involving the handling or transport of any unsealed radioactive substance must undergone a medical examination by the Medical Panel and has been certified fit by the Radiation Board for such employment and re-exam at intervals of every 14 months during continuous employment. Such person is classified as “radiation worker”.

To ensure regulatory compliance, it is foreseeable that under the new University policy/guideline, any person (staff or student) who applies for personal radiation monitoring services (personal TLD badge) will also be considered as “radiation worker”. Hence, such person must undergone a medical examination and certified fit for radiation works before work commencement, and re-exam at intervals of every 14 months during continuous employment.
Application for medical examination (free of charge) shall be made via the Radiation Board using a form or by on-line Electronic Radiation Licensing & Services System (ERLS).

Remark: In normal operation, any person who works with enclosed x-ray with shielding cabinet will not expose to radiation dose >6mSv per year. If you have concerns, you may apply a TLD for area monitoring (TLD with a room number).
