The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) at CityU admitted 339 first-year students from the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) main round admission in 2018/19. Twenty one students received the Dean’s Scholarships under the “CityU Scholarships for Hong Kong Talents”, 18 of whom were also awarded CLASS Elite Student Scholarships in recognition of their efforts and their excellent results in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education examination (HKDSE).

Not having expected to receive scholarships, Media and Communication students LEE Ka-fai and LAI Yan-tung were both thrilled and surprised when the university notified them. The scholarships not only provided them with a financial subsidy, but have also boosted their self-confidence. Both students hope to acquire a deeper understanding of media and communications, and apply what they have learnt in their future careers.

Linguistics and Translation student WONG Lok-yiu was also delighted to be one of the recipients, “It’s my deepest gratitude to be presented this scholarship. It serves as a recognition of my hard work in secondary school. This also makes my family proud,” she says. Lok-yiu realised in secondary school that she had a keen interest in language studies, and is determined to pursue this direction at university. “CityU’s Linguistics Department ranks 26th in the world. This is remarkable. Studying linguistics and translation at CityU is my dream, and now my dream has come true.” Apart from language-related studies, Lok-yiu is also looking forward to participating in overseas exchanges to gain exposure to other cultures and broaden her horizons.

Social and Behavioural Sciences student CHAN Ching-man also felt honoured and grateful to receive the scholarships. Her parents were also very pleased with her achievement. “The scholarship will certainly motivate me to work harder to achieve my goals. I will keep this momentum going and achieve new heights,” she says. Ching-man is very interested in social sciences and highly values the education the department offers. Having been studying at the university for over a month, she found the staff and her classmates are approachable and caring. Besides, she is also aware of the active promotion of service learning by CLASS and the department. “I will try my best to participate in voluntary work with my fellow classmates, in order to gain a deeper understanding of different segments of society and serve those in need,” said Ching-man.
