Recently, The Public Law and Human Rights Forum (CPLR) held a Roundtable titled “The Future of Common Law in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region”. This event brought together a stellar group of legal professionals and scholars to discuss critical issues of Hong Kong’s common law system. The main issues discussed at this Roundtable include the role of the common law system in Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability, controversies surrounding overseas non-permanent Judges in the Court of Final Appeal, and how the common law system can develop as an “institutional lever” to promote national development.

The Roundtable was inaugurated with the welcoming speech by Prof. Feng Lin, Dean of the School of Law, CityUHK. Prof. Guobin Zhu, Director of CPLR, made the introductory presentation on the background and significance of the Roundtable. Nine distinguished guests of honour and speakers delivered their speeches, and they are: Dr. Elsie Leung, GBM, JP, Mr. Daniel Fung, SC, KC, SBS, JP, FCIArb, Prof. Albert Chen, JP, SBS, GBS, The Honourable Carmen Kan, JP, Dr. William Wong, SC, JP, Ms. Winnie Tam, SC, SBS, JP, Mr. Victor Dawes, SC, Prof. Feng Lin, and Prof. Simon Young. The event was moderated by Dr. Celeste Lo, Postdoctoral Fellow, School of Law, CityUHK.

The Roundtable was concluded with the closing remarks by Prof. Guobin Zhu. He expressed heartfelt appreciation for the valuable insights and meaningful discussion of all esteemed speakers and thanked the speakers and participants for supporting and joining this event.
