The 29th Goff Arbitration Lecture: “Red Flags or White Flags? A Practical Guide to Dealing with Fraud in Arbitration”
CityUHK School of Law, in cooperation with Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) and Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF), held the 29th Goff Arbitration Lecture on 26 March 2025. This year, we were honoured to have The Right Honourable Dame Elizabeth Gloster, DBE PC, Former Court of Appeal Judge and International Commercial Arbitrator, as the speaker to give a lecture entitled “Red Flags or White Flags? A Practical Guide to Dealing with Fraud in Arbitration”. More than 200 participants attended the lecture at HKIAC and via Zoom.
The lecture kicked off with the welcome speech by Professor LIN Feng (Dean of CityUHK School of Law). Professor Lin explained the background and objectives of the Goff Arbitration Lecture. He also introduced the speaker and thanked all the participants for their support for the lecture over the years.
In her lecture, The Right Honourable Dame Elizabeth Gloster, DBE PC, talked about the decision of Knowles J in The Federal Republic of Nigeria v Process & Industrial Development Ltd [2023] EWHC 2638, explored the real-life implications for arbitrators in international arbitrations and provided practical advice on handling fraud in arbitration. After the lecture, the participants raised questions and interacted with her in the Q&A session moderated by Mr Neil KAPLAN CBE KC SBS (International Arbitrator, Arbitration Chambers). Finally, Ms Helen TANG (Senior Consultant, HSF) and Ms Joanne LAU (Secretary-General, HKIAC) closed the lecture and thanked the speaker for delivering an insightful lecture.
2025年3月26日，香港城市大學法律學院與香港國際仲裁中心及史密夫斐爾律師事務所合作，在香港國際仲裁中心舉行了第二十九屆戈夫仲裁講座。今年，學院很榮幸邀請到前上訴法院女大法官、國際商事仲裁員The Right Honourable Dame Elizabeth Gloster, DBE PC 主講「紅旗或白旗？處理仲裁中欺詐行為的實用指南」。講座吸引了200餘人到場或在線參與。
講座由港城大法律學院院長林峰教授致歡迎辭揭開序幕。林教授解釋了戈夫仲裁講座的背景和目的，亦介紹了今年的講者並感謝所有參與者對講座一直以來的支持。
The Right Honourable Dame Elizabeth Gloster, DBE PC在演講中談到Knowles法官就尼日利亞聯邦共和國訴 Process & Industrial Developments Limited [2023] EWHC 2638 一案作出的判決，探討了這一判決對國際仲裁中仲裁員的實際影響，並就如何處理仲裁中欺詐行為提供了實用建議。演講結束之後，聽眾向講者提問，與講者積極互動。提問環節由獨立仲裁員嘉柏倫先生主持。最後，史密夫斐爾律師事務所高級顧問唐漢潔女士及香港國際仲裁中心秘書長劉煦婷女士向講者致謝，感謝她為大家帶來了一場精彩而富有啟發性的講座。
