Co-organised by the Office of the Provost and Deputy President as well as the College of Science, the CityU Science Patent Challenge 2023/24 has attracted nearly 60 secondary school teachers and students to join the intellectual property workshop on 14 October 2023.
Professor Ray Cheung, Associate Provost (Digital Learning) in the Office of the Provost and Deputy President, welcomed all participants to the workshop. “CityU is actively promoting popular science in the community to enhance young people's technological knowledge and inspire their curiosity and creativity”, he said. “We hope to bring secondary school students a different learning experience beyond the classroom and help them cope with new challenges.”
Professor Raymond Chan, Dean of CityU’s College of Science, shared the encouraging achievements that the three winning schools of last year’s CityU Science Patent Challenge already have their Hong Kong short-term patents granted by the Intellectual Property Department, HKSAR Government. He encouraged all secondary students to take the challenge and embark on an exciting invention journey by submitting their innovative ideas by 29 December 2023.
Intellectual property is the backbone of many scientific and technological advances. Aiming to educate and inspire potential inventors, this half-day workshop guided the participants to understand the world of patent systems.
In the CityU Science Patent Challenge, students need to identify a problem and provide a creative and feasible way to solve it. All full-time secondary school students can participate individually or form a team of no more than eight participants in the name of their school. The Gold and Silver Award-winning teams will be provided with the full fee and consultation with a patent attorney for the application of a Hong Kong short-term patent.
