The College of Science and the College of Engineering were honoured to receive the delegation of Chang’e 4 Lunar Mission from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the China National Space Administration on 23 October 2019. The visit successfully connected national scientists and researchers in the university, creating solid ground for future collaboration in different technological areas.
The half-day visit to CityU kicked off with a featured lecture by Professor Xiaoyu Hong, one of the leading scientists at the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory. Professor Hong is also one of the major advocates for the application of Space VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) in aerospace technology. The insightful lecture was well received by the attending students and faculty members of the university. As Professor Alex Jen, Provost of the CityU, noted in his opening remarks, “the City University has been nurturing research professionals in different technological aspects and cultivating the sense of exploration in the next generation. The lecture provided a valuable platform for the CityU community to learn about the most advanced technology in mainland China.”
To enable the delegation to have a better understanding on the researches in the two Colleges, some faculty members took the opportunity to share their research highlights, which were related to aerospace development, at a seminar held right after the lecture. The delegation commended on the achievements of the Colleges and would seriously looked into future collaboration. The visit ended with a luncheon that allowed more mingling opportunities among faculty members and the delegation.
The visit was a part of celebration programmes to the 1st Anniversary of the Hong Kong STEM Education Alliance, co-organised by the College of Science and the College of Engineering. Being the host of the half-day visit, the Colleges had demonstrated the commitment in STEM education in Hong Kong for the next generation.
