College of Science (CSCI)’s chemist is once again recognised by academic bodies. Professor Guangyu Zhu, Head and Professor of the Department of Chemistry, recently received the James Hoeschele AsBIC Award from the Asian Society of Biological Inorganic Chemistry (AsBIC). Congratulations!
Professor Zhu, the second scientist from China to receive this award, was invited to the AsBIC conference to receive the award and delivered a plenary lecture titled “Biomedical Applications of Platinum Coordination Complexes” on 5 December.
The James Hoeschele AsBIC Award was established to recognise middle-career researchers in the Asia Pacific region who have had a significant scientific impact in the field of biological inorganic chemistry. Presented every alternate year, the Award aims to encourage collaboration and strengthen cooperation within the Asia-Pacific biological inorganic chemistry community.
Professor Zhu’s research interest lies at the interface of chemistry and biology, focusing on anticancer drug development and mechanism. His current research projects include the synthesis and biological evaluation of novel metal-based anticancer agents, the development of cancer-specific nanomedicine to conquer cisplatin resistance, and the screening of biologically active small-molecule anticancer agents and their target validation, by using interdisciplinary approaches and methods in the areas of biological chemistry, medicinal chemistry, molecular biology, and chemical biology.
