Co-organized by the Provost Office and the College of Science, the CityU Science Patent Challenge 2022 has received 24 school registrations for joining the competition. More than 30 secondary school teachers and students from these schools attended an entrepreneurship and intellectual property workshop of the CityU Science Patent Challenge on 8 October 2022.
Professor Wang Jianping, Assistant Provost (Strategic Planning and Quality Assurance), began the event by sharing a bold and meaningful invention by a recent Chemistry graduate who designed a small piece of paper to detect the freshness of meat. Professor Wang encouraged all secondary school teachers and students to chase their dreams, adding that “CityU is here to build the platform and lay the foundation for young learners of innovation and discovery.”
Professor Chun-Sing Lee, Dean of College of Science (CSCI), highlighted the research strength of CityU and the vast opportunities offered by CSCI. He also shared with participants that CityU was placed 29th among the top 100 universities granted US utility patent by the National Academy of Inventors in 2021, and ranked 1st among local institutions for the 6th consecutive year; showing that CityU is very serious in patent application and has remarkable achievements in innovation.
Intellectual property is the backbone of many scientific and technological advances. Aiming to educate and inspire those interested in patent and entrepreneurship, this one-day workshop provided useful tips on idea development and business opportunity recognition, and guided the participants to understand the world of invention, patent systems, and entrepreneurship. In the CityU Science Patent Challenge, students need to identify a problem and provide a creative and feasible way to solve it. Each of the Gold Award and Silver Award winning teams will receive full fee for the application of a Hong Kong short-term patent in consultation with a patent attorney appointed by CSCI.
