of Acting Vice-President (Undergraduate Education)
Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Associate Dean of the Faculty
of Science and Engineering, has been appointed Acting Vice-President (Undergraduate
Education) with effect from 21 May until 31 December 2007.

| Easing space
shortage
The Management Board has endorsed at its meeting on 18 May a proposal
to lease about 10,000 square feet of space at the Grand Century Place
Tower II next to the Mongkok KCR station for housing approximately 90
administrative and academic personnel. This short-term solution will help
ease space shortage on campus.

| CityU corporate
identity
The Management Board has approved policies and guidelines for the use
of the University's name and logo recommended by the Task Group for Corporate
Identity in order to clarify issues related to corporate identity.

| Outcomes
Based Teaching and Learning
A team of international consultants from the US, UK and Australia will
meet with individual departments at the University between 21 May and
1 June to give advice on how to deliver the courses using the OBTL framework.
Two seminars will also be held during the visit: "Large Class Teaching
and Assessment in an Outcomes Based Curriculum" on 25 May, and "Formative
Feedback on OBTL Courses" on 30 May. The first seminar explores issues
and activities related to large-class teaching, such as the "active/passive
interface", maintaining and enhancing concentration, and interaction
with classmates. The latter will examine ways to obtain feedback on the
implementation of OBTL and how to use that feedback for continuous improvement.
More than 600 academic courses will be delivered in the Outcomes Based
Teaching and Learning (OBTL) framework in the 2007-08 academic year. The
visit will help academic departments implement OBTL in their courses.

| Library
renovation
After gathering comments and suggestions from library users on spatial
issues through a consultation forum and a survey, the Run Run Shaw Library
will carry out the first phase of its renovation work in the summer break
starting from June. The construction of the "Learning Commons",
an ideal common space in the central part of the campus library, will
bring together services that enhance learning, research and technology
by integrating the IT help desk, media facilities, learning services,
library research help and information literacy.

symposium on university governance
CityU's Comparative Education Policy Research Unit in the Department of
Public and Social Administration is joining hands with the Centre for
East Asian Studies at the University of Bristol, UK, and the Research
Institute of Higher Education at the Hiroshima University, Japan, to organize
an international symposium on 1 June on university governance. The symposium
titled "The Search for New University Governance in Asia: Incorporation,
Corporatization and New Restructuring Strategies" will feature speakers
from universities in the US, UK, Australia, Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
The aim is to share strategies and practices for university governance,
a critical aspect in promoting Hong Kong as a regional hub for higher
education.

wins a scholarship from Germany
Li Chengqing, a PhD student in the Department of Electronic
Engineering, received a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange
Service (known as DAAD, i.e. Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst),
to undertake postgraduate studies and an academic visit in Germany for
six months in 2007. DAAD is a publicly-funded independent organization
of higher-education institutions in Germany. It has 14 international offices
providing information and financial support for international research
to over 50,000 highly-qualified students and faculty each year.

grab two prizes
Students from the School of Creative Media took home two prizes at the
Vita Lemon Tea Video Shooting Competition. The team "MIXPLAY NOW"
formed by seven Year 2 and Year 3 students won first place in the tertiary
institution group with their video Vita X MIXPLAY NOW. Li
Yin-fung, a Year 1 student, won third place with her video "
耭 耤 翴 ゎ 耭 耤 溯 虜 蟲 " (Lemon tea, something more than lemon
tea).

| New
books published
City University of Hong Kong Press published two books in May. CHINA:
Five Thousand Years of History and Civilization is a richly illustrated
chronicle of Chinese civilization which furnishes general readers and
scholars alike with an authoritative overview of Chinese history, art
and culture. Edited by the Hong Kong and Beijing scholars who produced
Chinese Civilization: A Source Book in 2001, this book covers
the pre-historic era to the early twentieth century, touching upon recurring
themes and developments, and synthesizing more than five thousand years
of evolution and transition. The second new book is by Professor
H K Chang, retired CityU President, titled From Movable Type
Printing to the World Wide Web: Essays on Civilizations, Cultures and
Education, which narrates his thoughts about world civilizations,
culture and life, society, education and science and technology.

Student Project Exhibition
A total of 80 projects by students in the Faculty of Science and Engineering
will be on display in a two-day exhibition on campus from 30 to 31 May,
showcasing students' creativity and applied technology skills. Tours for
secondary-school students will introduce more in-depth information on
the faculty's programmes and activities. The exhibition is just one of
the faculty's summer events aimed at broadening the knowledge base of
secondary school students and reinforcing their interests in science.
