Renowned architect to give Distinguished Lecture
In keeping with the University's commitment to promoting contemporary architecture as a major cultural force within society, the architect behind CityU's exciting new Creative Media Building will give a talk as part of the City University Distinguished Lecture Series. Mr Daniel Libeskind, whose lecture is entitled "Breaking Ground"the same title of his recently published memoiris one of the world's most celebrated architects, specializing in museums, concert halls, convention centres, universities and many other areas of urban design. His portfolio includes the Jewish Museum Berlin, the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester and office towers for the Hyundai Corporation in Seoul. Renowned for his multi-disciplinary approach and strong belief in humanistic, forward-looking architecture, he will share in his talk on 20 October his passion for architecture and its meaning and place in the world today.

 

Information Day 2006
The University has launched a website detailing the activities and events to be held on Information Day 2006, which takes place this year on 14 October. The address is http://www.22kk77.xyz/admo/InfoDay2006/. Under the theme "From Student to Professional", which highlights CityU's commitment to helping young people transform into well-educated professionals, Information Day will consist of exhibitions, talks, guided tours to laboratories, plus a first-time series of seminars for parents on how to guide their children towards university education. At these sessions, CityU professors and community celebrities will share their experience in financial management and provide guidance for young people on personal and career development.

 

Innovative projects win national awards
CityU participated in the 16th National Exhibition of Inventions for the first time, bringing home a clutch of awards for its innovative applied research projects. The Computer-Assisted Simulation System for Orthognathic Surgery project, conducted by Professor (Chair) Horace Ip Ho-shing of the Department of Computer Science, won a Gold Award. The Active RFID System, invented by Professor (Chair) Edward Yung Kai-ning and Dr Xue Quan of the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE), and the Fish Bioassay for Drug Screening and Environmental Toxicity Testing project, owned by Dr Cheng Shuk-han, an associate professor in the Department of Biology and Chemistry, won Silver Awards. EE's Professor (Chair) Yan Hong won a Bronze Award with his Real-time Lip-sync and Facial Animation System. The Exhibition of Inventions was held from 21 to 24 September in Dongguan, Guangdong Province.


Joint-hall Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration 2006
Mid-Autumn Festival this year takes on an international flavour as local and non-local students from the Halls of Student Residence join forces to celebrate one of the most important dates in the calendar. There will be moon cakes, traditional Chinese painting, Indian home-made snacks, dances, games, and arts and craft on 5 October outside Multi-function Hall A. The organizers are the Halls of Student Residence and the Student Residence Office, with the participation of the International and Non-local Students Office.


SLW professor addresses international arbitration meeting
Professor (Chair) Peter Malanczuk, Dean of the School of Law (SLW) and Director of the WTO Law & Dispute Resolution Centre, will give the welcoming address at an international lecture entitled "Impartiality and Independence of Arbitrators from a European Perspective". The lecture will be given by Professor Thomas Pfeiffer, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Heidelberg and Director of the Heidelberg Centre for Dispute Resolution, and will take place at the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre in Hong Kong on 5 October. The co-organizers are CityU, the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (East Asia Branch) and the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators.

 

Dress Special Day
Staff and students raised $12,693.50 for this year's Dress Special Day (formerly Dress Casual Day), which took place on 29 September. All donations will go to support the Family and Child Welfare Services under the Community Chest Umbrella.

 

External Appointments
Professor Richard Ho Yan-ki, Vice-President (Undergraduate Education), has been re-appointed as a member of the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation from 1 October 2006 until 30 September 2007.

Professor (Chair) James Moy, Dean of the School of Creative Media, has been appointed as a non-official member to the Digital 21 Strategy Advisory Committee, a body that advises on the formulation and implementation of the Digital 21 Strategy, a Government initiative to drive Hong Kong's development as a leading digital city. Professor Moy's term of appointment lasts from 1 October 2006 to 30 September 2008.

Dr Desmond O'Toole, Associate Professor in the Department of Biology and Chemistry, has been appointed as a member of the Expert Committee on Food Safety for a period of two years from 15 September 2006. The Committee advises the Director of Food and Environmental hygiene on food safety strategies.

 

Kudos
Professor Lai Kin-keung, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Business, has been selected as one of the "Ten Most Influential Management People in China" by the World Executive magazine and The Wall Street Wire website for his contributions to promoting management education in China.
