CityU Council Chairman
Mr Chung Shui-ming has been appointed Chairman of the
University Council of City University of Hong Kong for one year. Mr Chung
has served on the Council for more than eight years and has held the position
of Deputy Chairman since 2004. He served as Treasurer from 1999 to 2003
and was concurrently Chairman of the Finance Committee and Board of Trustees.
Under his leadership, the University was able to maintain a healthy financial
position in a very adverse economic environment.

| Honorary
Awards
The University will confer honorary degrees on the following persons in
recognition of their significant contributions to learning and the well-being
of society. The recipients are Mr Liu Changle, Chairman
and Chief Executive Officer of Phoenix Satellite Television Holdings Ltd,
who will receive an Honorary Doctor of Letters; Mr Xu Guanhua,
Minister of Science and Technology of China, who will receive an Honorary
Doctor of Science; and Professor Rosie Young Tse-tse,
an honorary professor in medicine at the University of Hong Kong, who
will receive an Honorary Doctor of Science. The conferment of honorary
awards will take place at the 2006 Congregation to be held on 15 November
2006.

| Search
for the President
The Council has established the Search Committee for the next President
and charged it with the task of identifying and considering suitable candidates.
The Committee is now conducting a world-wide search for a suitable appointee
and the position has been advertised in the international press, journals
and associated web sites. In addition, the University is seeking nominations
for the post and has circulated a call for nominations to leading universities
around the world. CityU staff members are also invited to submit nominations.
All nominations and applications will be dealt with in the strictest confidence.The
deadline for submissions is 30 September 2006.

| Sharing
the experience of art
The University is dedicated to cultivating greater interest in the arts
for whole-person development among the campus community. In keeping with
this commitment, the Library and the Human Resources Office have organized
the "Exhibition of Art Works by Members of CityU Community".
The display features paintings, calligraphy, sketches and pottery created
by CityU people. The exhibition kicks off on 6 July with a sharing session
entitled "Sharing the Experience of Art" and an opening ceremony
at which the officiating guests will be Professor H K Chang,
President, Professor Richard Ho Yan-ki, Vice-President
for Undergraduate Education, Dr Ellen Ko Law Yin-lan,
Acting Vice-President for Administration and Director of Human Resources,
and Professor Steve Ching Hsianghoo, University Librarian.
The exhibition will be on display in the Library Lobby from 6 July to
6 August.

| 5-day
working week
The 5-day work week will commence from 1 July 2006, following the decision
taken by the Management Board at its meeting on 27 March 2006 to endorse
the new schedule. Academic, administrative and services departments can
arrange a 5-day work week accordingly, although individual departments
have the discretion to make suitable arrangements for operations on Saturdays
to ensure the provision of adequate services.
Meanwhile, the University
will maintain its core operating hours, including Saturday mornings, and
departments offering essential services will continue to meet operational
requirements by means of a roster or shift duties. These departments include
Academic Regulations and Records Office (counter service); Admissions
Office (counter service); Communications Office; Computing Services Centre;
Facilities Management Office; Library; and Student Development Services
(including Student Residence Office).

| Teaching
Grade Terms of Service
To rationalize the grades for staff engaged primarily in teaching and
related functions, and to recognize the increasingly important role played
by these members of staff, the Council approved at its meeting on 26 June
the introduction of the new Teaching Grade Terms, to take effect from
1 July 2006.

| Prize-winning
electronic engineering students
Four students from the Department of Electronic Engineering have
won top honours at the Institution of Engineering and Technology Hong
Kong Young Member Exhibition/Conference (YMEC2006). PhD student Chiu
Leung won the championship in the postgraduate section for his
paper "High Performance Analog Adaptive Arrays for Modern Wireless
Communications". He was also nominated and fully sponsored to join
the final of the international competition in the UK. Chiu's supervisor
was Dr Xue Quan, Associate Professor in the Department.
Another PhD student, Steven Yang Shing-lung, supervised
by Professor (Chair) Luk Kwai-man, Head of Department,
won the second runner-up for his paper "Design of Wideband Table-shaped
Reconfigurable Antennas". Undergraduate Chan Yi-wah,
supervised by Professor Luk, won the first runner-up for her paper "The
Study of Ultra Wideband Monopole/Dielectric Resonator Antenna". Wong
Ka-wai, supervised by Dr Xue, won the second runner-up, the Best
Presentation Award and the Most Supported Award in the undergraduate section
for his paper "2-Dimensional Retro-directive Array for Mobile Communication
Systems".

| The
works of Zhu Suizhi
CityU Gallery is hosting an exhibition featuring the calligraphy, painting
and seal carvings of renowned artist Professor Zhu Suizhi,
Director of the Department of Calligraphy in the China Academy of Art.
The exhibition, entitled "The Works of Zhu Suizhi", has been
organized by the Chinese Civilisation Centre. It is open daily until 20
August.
