| Internationalization
of higher education
CityU will host a key meeting on the internationalization of higher education
in the region from 12 to 13 January. The "Symposium on the internationalization
of higher education and international collaboration in the mainland and
Hong Kong" will be attended by representatives from the Ministry
of Education, the Chinese Association of Higher Education (CAHE), prominent
mainland universities and institutions in Hong Kong. Ms Charmaine
Wong, Deputy Secretary-General of the University Grants Committee,
and a representative from the Liaison Office of the Central People's
Government in the HKSAR will also be present. The event is co-organized
by CityU and CAHE.

Teaching
Development Grant 2005-08
The University Grants Committee (UGC) has allocated CityU $15.7m for the
development of teaching and learning initiatives through the Teaching
Development Grant (TDG). The focus of this round of the TDG at CityU is
to encourage the development of innovative and effective teaching and
learning practices that can be institutionalized upon completion. All
full-time members of staff are invited to submit proposals. Up to $200,000
will be given to each individual project and $2.5m to University-wide
projects.

City
Literary Award
To enhance creativity and proficiency
in Chinese, the Cultural and Sports Committee, the Chinese
Civilisation Centre (CCIV) and the Department
of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics are organizing the City Literary
Award, which is sponsored by the Macao Foundation. This award, previously
known as the CityU Literary Award, demonstrates the University's commitment
to raising interest in, and levels of motivation to learn, Chinese. This
year, in addition to those from CityU, students from all tertiary institutions
in Hong Kong and Macao are eligible to participate. The theme is "City
Image" and the competition comprises three categories: non-fiction
prose, short stories and poetry. There will be a first prize, first and
second runners-up and merit places.

Hot
off the press
CityU Press
has published The July 1 Protest RallyInterpreting a Historic Event,
the first authoritative volume to address the mass protest on 1 July 2003.
Top academics in the region, including four from CityU, offer readers
in-depth coverage of the political, social and economic implications of
the rally. The book was edited by Professor (Chair) Joseph Cheng
of the Department of Public and Social
Administration.

Council Election
Dr Fung Wai-wah, a senior lecturer
in the Division of Social Studies
in the Community College of CityU,
was elected to the University Council following elections on 20 December
2005. The period of office to be recommended for Dr Fung is from 1 January
to 31 December 2006.

Kudos
Professor (Chair) Wei Kwok-kee, Head of the Department
of Information Systems (IS), has been honoured with the Association
for Information Systems (AIS) Fellow Award. Professor Wei is the second
academic from Hong Kong to receive this prestigious award. Professor
(Chair) Douglas Vogel, his colleague in IS, was named an AIS
Fellow in 2004.

Film
awards
Ms Zhang Jing, an MFA student in the School
of Creative Media won a Merit Award in the "2005 Award of Excellent
Digital Video Documentary Competition for University Students" which
was held between March and October 2005. The organizers were the People
Daily website and Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communication at
Shantou University.

Top student
in PBE
Ms Yeung Siu-ling,
a student in the School of Continuing
and Professional Education, has been selected as the Top Student in
"Paper I: Financial Reporting" in the June 2005 Professional
Bridging Examination (PBE) conducted by the Hong Kong Association of Accounting
Technicians.

Best
Paper Awards
A cross-discipline team from
CityU secured the Best Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference
on Industrial Technology 2005. The authors of the paper are Professor
K F Man, Dr K S Tang, Associate Professor, and
Mr T M Chan, a PhD student, all from the Department
of Electronic Engineering, and Dr Sam Kwong from
the Department of Computer Science.
Professor Mohamed
Khalifa of the Department
of Information Systems (IS) and Dr Vanessa Liu Shun-wah,
a 2005 PhD graduate from IS and currently an assistant professor at the
New Jersey Institute of Technology, received the Best Paper Award in Conference
Theme at the International Conference of Information Systems, conducted
under the auspices of the Association of Information Systems.

Speech at Renmin
University
Professor (Chair) Peter
Malanczuk, Dean of the School
of Law, was invited by Dean Wang Limin to give the
Congratulatory Speech on the occasion of the 55th Anniversary of Renmin
University Law School in Beijing and the Opening of the New Law Building
on 30 December 2005. Other speakers included Chief Justice Xiao
Yang and other dignitaries. CityU maintains close relations with
Renmin Law School, one of the most prestigious in mainland China.

Annual
Concert 2006
The CityU Philharmonic Orchestra
will perform Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and Choral Fantasy alongside
well-known local soloists and musicians at its annual concert to be held
this year on 14 January at Hong Kong City Hall. This will be the first
time the Orchestra has performed with CityU Choir and CityU Staff Association
Singing Group.

Earthquake
appeal
Proceeds from a used book sale
organized by the CityU Staff Association in December to help victims of
the earthquake in Pakistan and India raised $9,579.10. A cheque was presented
to Ms Bonnie So, Head of International and Relief Services
of the Hong Kong Red Cross at a ceremony on 21 December 2005
