CityU ranks among top 200 world universities
CityU ranks 198th on the best 200 world universities and top 10 in Greater China according to the Times Higher Education Supplement. The ranking by a prestigious UK newspaper plus the top 10 ranking in Greater China in the two annual studies by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, confirm the University's growing recognition in the international arena.

CCCU building site
The University announced six possible on-campus sites for the Community College of City University (CCCU) and sought comments from staff and students, 8-14 November. As the University has to submit an application for a Government loan to finance the building project by the deadline on 20 November, it needs to make a decision on the location of the building soon. The comments solicited will be tabled together with the Management Board's recommendations for reference at the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Council on 16 November.

On-campus Service-Learning Scheme
In order to enhance students' long-term professional development and promote full integration of learning and working experiences for students, the University plans to launch an on-campus Service-Learning Scheme in January 2005 with an aim to provide 1,000 service-learning opportunities to the undergraduate students. The University is soliciting information and views from academic and administrative offices via a questionnaire to determine the feasibility of the Scheme.

Third Distinguished Lecture
Turkish writer Mr Orhan Pamuk, one of Europe's most prominent novelists, will deliver a lecture titled "The Making of My Name is Red" as the last of the Distinguished Lecture Series to celebrate CityU's 20th Anniversary on 25 November, 3:30-5:30 pm, in the Wei Hing Theatre. My Name is Red, at once a murder mystery and a love story, is set in 16th century Istanbul. The novel has won the French Prix Du Meilleur Livre Etranger, the Italian Grinzane Cavour, and the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. In his lecture, Mr Pamuk will talk about the ideas, research, historical facts, literary techniques, narrative methods and philosophies of ways of seeing which contributed to the composition of the novel. Mr Pamuk is the author of seven novels and a screenplay. His work has been translated into more than thirty languages.

20th Anniversary updates
Handprint Painting¡XOn 14 November, Professor H K Chang, University President, Professor David Tong, Deputy President; Professor Edmond Ko, Vice-President (Undergraduate Education) and Dean of Students; Professor Y S Wong, Vice-President (Administration); Mr Patrick Lee, Chairman, CityU Alumni Association; and Mr Kelvin Chan, President, CityU Students' Union, launched the 'handprint painting' of a dragon. CityU staff, students, alumni, friends and families joined in to complete the main body of the painting which is over 300 sq. metres, exceeding the minimum requirement of 210 sq. metres to break the Guinness World Records.

Seminar¡XProfessor Zhu Qingshi, President of the University of Science and Technology of China, will conduct a seminar titled, "Minds and Machines: Dialogue between Technology and Culture in Everyday Life", organized by the Chinese Civilisation Centre (CCIV), 19 November, 4-6:30pm, CCIV AV Room.

Alumni Banquet and Leaders' Forum¡XIn celebration of the University's 20th Anniversary, the Development and Alumni Relations Office (DAO) and CityU Alumni Association are jointly organizing the Alumni Banquet, 20 November. Prior to the banquet, Mr Tsang Yam-pui, GBS, OBE, QPM, CPM, will speak on "Lead through Waves of Change, Embark on New Heights of Success" at the 20th Anniversary Leaders' Forum. The forum, jointly organized by the Faculty of Business, the EMBA Alumni Association, and DAO will take place 6:30-8 pm, Wei Hing Theatre.

Kudos
Professor Roderick Wong, Dean of Research and Graduate Studies, Professor (Chair) of Mathematics, and Director of the Liu Bie Ju Centre for Mathematical Sciences, received the Chevalier dans l'Ordre National de la Legion d'Honneur for his research in Mathematics, his academic standing, achievements and outstanding contributions to the furthering of links between the French and Hong Kong mathematical communities. This is the highest award given by the French Republic for people who have rendered outstanding services to France. Among the 30 holders of this honour in Hong Kong, three are with CityU including Professor Philippe Ciarlet, Professor (Chair) of Mathematics, and CityU President, Professor H K Chang, who were awarded the honour in 1999 and 2000 respectively.

Plasma Technology Ltd, led by Managing Director and Chair Professor Paul Chu of the Department of Physics and Materials Science, won the 2004 Hong Kong Awards for Industry: Technological Achievement Certificate of Merit. The company, a member of CityU Enterprises Ltd, specializes in the design and production of advanced plasma equipment. The Award, co-ordinated by the Hong Kong Productivity Council, recognizes and promotes successful practices and strategies in different aspects of industrial performance.

More Kudos
Chair Professor Joseph Lai Ki-leuk, Department of Physics and Materials Science, was elected Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Mr Simon Choy Siu-kei, a first-year student in ASocSc in Public Administration and Management, was selected as one of the 8th annual Ten Outstanding Warriors awardees. The Award, jointly organized by the Regeneration Society Ltd and RTHK Radio One, aims to recognize the stoicism of long-term illness patients and to encourage people to face challenges in life.

External appointments
Professor M J A Cooray, School of Law, has been appointed Deputy Chairman of the Town Planning Appeal Board with effect from 1 October 2004, for a period of two years.

Professor Zhou Nan, Head, Department of Marketing, has been appointed Adjunct Professor in the Business School of Wuhan University.
