CMC project development
The Sham Shui Po District Council expressed strong support for the landmark Creative Media Centre (CMC) at a briefing on the project on 26 October. The University will submit plans for the CMC in early November to the Town Planning Board for consideration and approval.

19th Congregation
At the 19th Congregation to be held from 9-13 November, CityU will confer academic awards on a total of 7,556 graduates. This year also witnesses the first batch of graduates in BSocSc(Hons) Psychology, BEng(Hons) Manufacturing Informatics and Systems Engineering, MSc Multimedia Information Technology, and the first batch of graduates from the full-time self-financing Associate Degree programmes at the Telford Annex.

At the Congregation, the University will also confer Honorary Degrees to five distinguished individuals: Mr John Chen, Chief Executive Officer and President of Sybase Inc., to be awarded Honorary Doctor of Science; Dr Chung Chi-yung, founder and Vice-President of Hong Kong Shue Yan College, to be awarded Honorary Doctor of Social Science; Mr Norman Leung Nai-pang, GBS, JP, immediate past Chairman of the University Council, and Executive Deputy Chairman of Television Broadcasts Ltd., to be awarded Honorary Doctor of Laws; Dr Peter Woo Kwong-ching, Chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, to be awarded Honorary Doctor of Business Administration; and Mr Justice Xiao Yang, Chief Justice and the President of the Supreme People's Court of China, to be awarded Honorary Doctor of Laws.

Second Distinguished Lecture
Mr Justice Xiao Yang, Chief Justice and President of the Supreme People's Court of China, will deliver a lecture titled "The Judicial System in China and its Reform" at the second scheduled talk in the 20th Anniversary Distinguished Lecture Series on 12 November, 5:30 pm, Wei Hing Theatre. In addition to giving the lecture, Mr Justice Xiao will visit the School of Law and the Library, and meet with staff and students. Enquiries: 2788 9317.

Senior staff appointment
Ms Jennifer Ng has been appointed Principal of the Community College of City University. Ms Ng, who has spent over 20 years in higher education in Hong Kong, will bring a wealth of experience to the new post.

20th Anniversary updates
"Proud of 20" -- The "Proud of 20" Team will take part in the Oxfam Trailwalker 2004 from 5-7 November. At the CityU Banquet held on 29 October, Council Chairman Sir Gordon Wu donated HK$100,000 in support of the team. Staff, students and alumni are welcome to make donations to show their support. Applied Research Exhibition and Concurrent Seminar -- The opening ceremony will take place on 5 November at 2pm, Purple Zone, 4/F, Academic Building. The ceremony will be officiated by Mr John Tsang Chun-wah, JP, Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology. The exhibition, showcasing CityU's outputs in applied research, will last until 13 November, Blue Zone, 4/F, Academic Building.

Palm Painting -- The Students' Union will organize a "City Dragon" programme by inviting students, staff, alumni and friends of the University to produce a palm print painting of a dragon. The painting symbolizes the energetic spirit, creativity and unity of the CityU community. The University has submitted an application to the Guinness World Records for creating the longest palm painting. The launching ceremony will take place on 14 November, Covered Terrace. All CityU members are invited to print their palms on the painting from 14-21 November.

The Anniversary Celebration -- CityU will organize a 20th Anniversary Celebration to serve as a festive highlight of the anniversary on 20 December at the University Circle. Staff, students and friends of the University will be treated to music, singing performances, prize presentations and light refreshments. The event will also mark the completion of the Palm Painting.

Commemorative Album -- The University will publish an anniversary commemorative album to recap its past development and achievements in education and research through a series of interviews with staff, students and alumni.

Kudos
CityU has proven its commitment to environmental protection and waste reduction with the Facilities Management Office receiving authorization from the Environmental Protection Department to use the Gold Wastewi$e Logo from 1 October 2004 to 30 September 2005. The Wastewi$e Scheme recognizes the achievement and leadership position of the participating company in waste reduction and environmental protection.

More Kudos
Research students in the Department of Electronic Engineering topped the 5th IEEE (HK/Macau) AP/MTT Postgraduate Conference's Best Paper Awards. Mr Chiu Leung, an MPhil student, clinched the championship in the AP Session while Mr Steven Yang Shing-lung, a PhD student, won the first runner up. In the MTT session, Ms Mo Ting-ting, a PhD student, won the championship.

Conferences
"Present and Future of Civil Law in Greater China" -- Conference on the 200th Anniversary of the French Civil Code, organized by CityU's School of Law, Legal and Judicial Training Centre of Macao SAR, and Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macao, 9 November, Multi-Purpose Hall 1, Student Residence. The second day of the conference will take place at the University of Macau.

"China-Japan Joint Conference to Promote Cooperation in Natural Language Processing", organized by the Language Information Sciences Research Centre, 10-13 November, Multimedia Conference Room.
