Appointments
Professor Frank Chen Youhua has been appointed as the Head of Department of Management Sciences. He joined the University in 2012 and is currently Professor in the Department of Management Sciences.

Professor Sun Dong has been appointed as the Head of Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering. Professor Sun joined the University in 2000 and is currently Chair Professor of Biomedical Engineering.

Veterinary continuing education programme
Jointly organised by the School of Veterinary Medicine at CityU and The Hong Kong Veterinary Association, a veterinary continuing education programme in Cytology and Oncology will be held from 28 to 29 August at CityU.

The two-day programme includes seminars taught by senior practitioners in cytology and surgical pathology and a series of workshops. The senior practitioners will also share good practices in histopathology reporting. The workshop series, Cytology for the General Practitioner, will provide opportunities for participants to discuss actual cases.

2014 International Conference on Translation Education
The 2014 International Conference on Translation Education will be held on 16 to 17 August, organised by The Halliday Centre for Intelligent Applications of Language Studies at CityU. The theme this year is Computer-Aided Teaching of Translation: Theory, Practice and New Technologies. It will bring together translation educators and practitioners, language experts, language programme designers, software developers, publishers and translation and education service providers for a 2-day discussion about the significance of computer-aided, corpus-based modes of teaching for translation studies and related topics. The Conference will also include a special hands-on technology workshop on computer-aided online teaching of English and Chinese translation.

Two PhD students in the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE), Chui Kwok-tai and Benjamin Li Yee-shing, together with Mr Chow Wai-hei, a graduate from the BEng (Hons) programme in Electronic and Communication Engineering, received the 2nd Prize in the 2014 IEEE Region 10 Student Paper Contest (Post-Graduate Category). The winning paper, supervised by Professor Henry Chung Shu-hung, Professor in EE and Dr Tsang Kim-fung , Associate Professor in EE, is titled "Driver Fatigue Detection using A Novel ECG based Drowsiness Detection Algorithm with Head Distraction Detection."

The IEEE Region 10 Student Activities Committee conducts two student paper contests every year. The papers are judged on the technical content, innovation, practical implementation, references and overall presentation.

Two teams supervised by Dr Tan Chee Wei, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science (CS), won 3rd Prize in the 2014 Intel Cup Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest–Embedded System Design Invitational Contest held in Shanghai. The teams comprised three students from EE: Wu Haotian, Liu Xinhong and Ip Wai-kei, as well as three students from CS: Wong Kai-hei, Ng Ming-wai and Tang Xiaoting.

Hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the biennial international contest provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to design a working system based on an assigned Intel embedded platform within three months.

Chi Haoran, a PhD student in EE, won the 1st Runner-up in The Institution of Engineering and Technology Hong Kong Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition 2014 (YPEC 2014) – Postgraduate Session. The winning project, supervised by Dr Tsang Kim-fung, Associate Professor in EE, and Dr Rynson Lau Wing-hung, Associate Professor in CS, is titled “A Design of ZigBee Based Advanced Metering Infrastructure with Interference Avoidance.”

YPEC is an exhibition and conference in which students and young professionals in engineering and technology present their projects on a competitive basis.
