Congregation 2012
More than 10,000 awards ranging from PhDs to associate degrees will be conferred on CityU students at the 2012 Congregation from 13–20 November for the University and from 21–22 November for CCCU at Chan Tai Ho Multi-purpose Hall. In addition, three distinguished persons will receive honorary doctoral degrees on 13 November in recognition of their significant contributions to education and the well-being of society. 

Professor Bai Chunli, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Science (in absentia); Mr Hu Fa-kuang, Honorary Chairman of Ryoden Development Limited, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Social Science; and Dr Allan Zeman, Chairman of the Ocean Park Corporation and Chairman of Lan Kwai Fong Holdings Limited, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration.

Distinguished lectures
Professor Bai Chunli, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and an honorary degree recipient for 2012, will give a talk titled “Progress in and Prospectives for Nanotechnology: From Fundamental Research to Application” on 21 November.

In addition, as part of the ongoing City University Distinguished Lecture Series, Professor Huang Chin-shing, Distinguished Research Fellow and Director of the Institute of History and Philology, will reflect on the study of Confucianism as a religion on 8 November, while Dr Chiang Pin-kung, former Chairman of Taiwan’s Straits Exchange Foundation, which handles technical or business matters with mainland China, will talk about the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement on 12 November.

Research funding
A research team led by Professor Xue Quan, Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Millimeter Waves at CityU and a member of the faculty of the Department of Electronic Engineering, has received sponsorship worth HK$20 million to develop a high-speed wireless data transceiver system with a 7GB per second data transmission rate, which is almost 50 times faster than a wi-fi system. HK$18 million of the sponsorship is from the Innovation and Technology Fund under the Innovation and Technology Commission. It represents the largest-ever sponsorship that the University has received from the fund.

Kudos
Lam Ho-tak, a Year 3 student on the Bachelor of Arts in Creative Media programme in the School of Creative Media (SCM), won an award in the best experimental film category at the 9th Sedicicorto International Film Festival in Italy with his film City#3721.

In addition, Zoie Chow Shuk-yee, a Year 2 student on the Bachelor of Science in Creative Media programme in the SCM, won the Youth Square Logo Design Competition, a project commissioned by the Home Affairs Bureau.
