Senior appointment
Professor Sam Kwong Tak-wu has been appointed as Head of the Department of Computer Science with effect from 3 July 2012. Professor Kwong has served the University for over 20 years and is now a Professor in the Department. His research interests include evolutionary algorithms, data compression and speech recognition, and video coding.

SCM Annual
Over 70 graduating artists from the School of Creative Media (SCM) are showcasing their photography, interactive installations, inter-media, animations, feature films, documentaries and experimental films at the SCM Annual 2012 from 30 June to 15 July at the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre. The theme of this year's annual is "Pass it on".

Hong Kong Book Fair
CityU Press will launch 10 new titles, including the new Gateway Education series, at the Hong Kong Book Fair from 18 to 24 July at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. CityU's booth, its largest ever at the fair, will host talks by authors, CityU staff and alumni on topics such as GE. In addition, Professor Way Kuo, CityU President, will give a talk on 21 July as part of the Reading and Lifestyle Seminar.

Academic 3 received a merit award under the "New Building-Hong Kong" (Building Under Construction) category of the Green Building Award 2012, co-organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council and the Professional Green Building Council.

Students from the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE), the Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering (MBE), and the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (SEEM) recently won the Second Runner-Up Award and Best Team Spirit Award in the Robocon Competition 2012. The winning project was supervised by Dr Ricky Lau Wing-hong, Associate Professor in the EE, Dr Louis Liu King-pui, an instructor in SEEM, and Dr Luk Bing-lam, Senior Engineer in MBE. The CityU students will represent Hong Kong at the ABU Asia-Pacific Robot Contest 2012 in Hong Kong on 19 August.

The Japanese Geotechnical Society has awarded Professor Matthew Coop, Chair Professor of the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering, a Best Research Paper Award for "The Influence of Particle Breakage on the Location of the Critical State Line of Sands". The award-winning paper, for which Professor Coop was the second author, was published in the international journal Soils and Foundations in August 2011 in collaboration with Dr Valeria Bandini of the University of Messina, Italy.
