Rising in the rankings
CityU placed 43rd—second among Hong Kong's universities—in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) in Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences compiled by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The University was ranked 51st–77th place in the last three years. In ARWU subject fields, CityU placed 45th and 51st–76th in computer science and mathematics, respectively.

Additionally, the College of Business has been placed 58th among 100 world-ranked and 2nd among Hong Kong tertiary institutions in management research, according to a database at the University of Texas at Dallas that tracks publications in 24 leading business journals. The CityU ranking is based on the quantity and quality of research published in 2009–10 in the top five management journals—Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science and Strategic Management Journal. In addition, the College has secured 26 projects and is ranked 2nd in Business Studies for General Research Fund projects of the Research Grants Council for 2010–11.
