Senior appointments
Dr David Cheng Xing has been appointed as Associate Vice-President (Mainland and External Affairs). Dr Cheng has extensive experience in dealing with the mainland and overseas organisations/institutions on joint teaching programmes and research activities. Before joining the University, he was the Executive Director of the Office of the Provost and Assistant Dean for Research and Planning at Columbia University, US.

Professor Chen Jie has been appointed as Chair Professor of Electronic Engineering in the Department of Electronic Engineering. Professor Chen received his Master and PhD degrees from the University of Michigan, US. His research expertise includes linear multivariable systems theory, system identification, robust control, optimisation and networked control. He is a Fellow of IEEE, Fellow of AAAS and a Yangtze Scholar. He has received prestigious awards including the 1996 US National Science Foundation CAREER Award and 2006 National Natural Science Foundation of China Outstanding Overseas Young Scholar Award.

Kudos
Professor Tommy Chow Wai-shing of the Department of Electronic Engineering has been awarded the Third Class Prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Award by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government for his research project "Learning Theory Based Signal Processing Theory". This is a collaborative research project conducted with Professor Fang Yong of Shanghai University.

A recent graduate from the Department of Applied Social Studies, Melody Wong Kai-yan, received the Certificate of Merit in the 2009 International Student Research Award organised by the Division of International Psychology (Division 52) of the American Psychological Association. Her award-winning research paper was entitled "A Cultural Comparison of Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies among Hong Kong Chinese and North Americans". Her supervisor was Dr Dannii Yeung Yuen-lan, Assistant Professor of the same department.

External appointment
Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on, Associate Dean of College of Business and Chair Professor of Information Systems and E-Commerce, has been appointed by the HKSAR Government as a member of the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation (HKCPEC) for a new term of two years with effect from 1 April 2010. HKCPEC advises the Government on matters relating to Hong Kong's participation in the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council.

BuiltExpo
BuiltExpo 2010, an annual event showcasing the work of students from the Division of Building Science and Technology (BST), will be held on 16-17 April. The theme for this year is "Advancement in Design and Building". Guests officiating at the opening ceremony will be Mr Yau Shing-mu, Under Secretary for Transportation and Housing, Mr Conrad Wong Tin-cheung, Chairman of the Divisional Advisory Committee, BST, and Professor Chan Chi-hou, Acting Provost.

Creative projects exhibition
Final year students majoring in English for Professional Communication in the Department of English will showcase their communication projects at the Professional Communication Projects Exhibition under the theme of "Communicate Creatively in English; Become a Real Professional" from 13-15 April. Mr Vincent Wong Wing, Director of Strategic Planning, Hong Kong Commercial Broadcasting, will deliver a keynote speech at the opening ceremony on 13 April.
